Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as IC 3862, is an unusual galaxy located 190 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venetici at a declination of +36 degrees. This magnitude 16 object spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a length of 60,000 light years.

In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Galaxies with Irregular Clumps.

This is a galaxy structure that is tough to understand. Its size makes it a bit too large to be a typical dwarf or irregular galaxy. The central bright region looks similar to a galaxy core in brightness but not in shape. It could be two small galaxies in the process of merging, especially given the star clumps in the “tail”, but even that doesn’t quite feel right to me.
